Images and Virtual Space

hi all,
I think the idea of consumerism and images bombarding us is very pertinent. Perhaps one role of art could be to try and clear some kind of oasis in the midst of it? Art seems to have traditionally held the role of a mirror to society; perhaps now it could be about allowing a space in which people have room to think and respond- pretty well the opposite of what media does for us.
I'm also pretty enthused over the idea of the virtual space. It brings up a lot of questions: how do we experience a virtual space? how does it compare with the traditional gallery space? how can the above notion of space and images be questioned or challenged through the virtual space?
In a way, you could argue that the virtual space is more truly artistic because the pieces online can't be sold like traditional work can- how does the virtual space relate to commercialism?

(I'm working on how to make art that can live in the virtual space, but please bear in mind that I'm not good with computers, so any suggestions for how to hurry my education would be welcome.)

Online Crits

Hey, I just had a thought.

What does everybody think about having online crits on here? Could take the form of somebody posting their work (or a link to their work, or an invitation to a location where the work is displayed) and then just a thread of comments.

There is a school of thought in the market research that people are more honest about their opinions when they discuss something online - I guess because they find it easier to say more challenging things to someone who isn't physically present! So a lot of organisations are getting into canvassing opinions by using chatrooms and forums. Could be an interesting experiment no?

consumerism, in relation to their affect on youth and local

bombarding of images.. attempting to make marshmallow guns this xmas i'll let
you know what happens!

desensitisation

I was thinking of making work about 'desensitization'. With reference to the internet and how we have access and are bombarded with images from google, youtube, wikipedia, yadda yadda and somehow it feels ok because of maybe distancing through pixelisation?
